40 Years Later, Same Yearbook Outfit

Posted by: admin In: Uncategorized 16 Sep 2013 Comments: 0

As the years went on, the sweater-vest outfit never got old. Teacher Dale Irby, 63, has retired this year after a long and remarkable career in the Texas Public School system. His career-long fashion statement will live on in his absence; Irby wore the same coffee-colored sweater for his Yearbook photo year after year, for forty plus years.

“I was so embarrassed when I got the school pictures back that second year and realized I had worn the very same thing as the first year,” says Irby.  After some urging from his wife, Cathy Irby, who found it humorous and wondered, “Why Stop?”   It became a “Groundhog Day” of outfits:  polyester, pointy collared shirt and a coffee cream colored sweater.

Forty years later the shirt still fits.  The clothes have even outlasted the store and the mall that they were originally purchased from.

What will become of the clothes now?   Irby has decided to give them a retirement of their own, in the back of the closet.   “I don’t think the Smithsonian would want them,”  he added.

Download Yearbooks Desktop v14.00 for Windows and Mac OS

Posted by: admin In: Press Release 13 Sep 2013 Comments: 0 Tags: Backgrounds, Canvas, clipart, download, Mac, OS X, v14.00, Windows

We are extremely pleased to announce that we have released our newest version of Yearbooks Desktop and posted it to the web.  We invite you to visit our downloads page and try it out!logo

This exciting new version features a brand new work-space plug-in for the page editor, called Canvas, which actually debuted in last year’s Mac OSX edition.

Speaking of Canvas, in this new edition we have developed one page editor for both versions, so once again we have complete and true cross-compatibility (data files from the Windows edition will open perfectly in the Mac edition).   As a publisher, when a customer returns their data to you for final printing – it no longer matters what edition of Yearbooks Desktop you prefer to run, the book will look precisely as it should.   Along with a new work-space in the page editor, Canvas allows us to use a floating toolbar and a right click menu, and subsequently we have moved many of the most commonly used features to the new interface.  The end result is quite spectacular as it gives you much more ‘real estate’ (working space) on the page editor itself.

Along with a new editor, we have completely refreshed the program’s media library.   Hundreds of brand new, fresh, modern images have been added to our backgrounds and clip-art archives.   These are automatically installed with the software and you can start using them immediately.   Don’t fret, the old media libraries are still available and will be available for download on this website in the very near future.

Finally, our collage tool has been integrated into our template tool, to facilitate groups of images being flown into predetermined template patterns with just a few mouse clicks.  The program will even automatically generate the required number of pages based on the number of images you’ve selected.   This tool is a great starting point for creating page samples.

We have also created a brand new website for the 2014 season which we hope will serve your needs much better.  I’ll share more details about the website over the next few weeks.  For now, get downloading!

The Professional School Photographers Association (PSPA) has been defining the industry standard for photo CD’s in the yearbook industry for many years.  Obviously, our program is built to work based on this standard, so we’re dedicating today’s blog post to all things PSPA.

For a look at the PSPA website, click here.

We have posted all of our PSPA related help documents and tech notes to our support site.  Check them out here!  This page includes instructions for importing PSPA and non PSPA CD’s into our Yearbooks program as well.

A Shout Out to Bill Nye

Posted by: admin In: Uncategorized 05 Dec 2012 Comments: 0 Tags: 2013, bill, nye, photo, year book, yearbook

William NyeLast week, Bill Nye, best known as “the science guy” turned 57!  What better way for us to give a shout out to Bill than to post his old yearbook photo in our blog!

Nye began his professional entertainment career as an actor on a local sketch comedy television show in Seattle,Washington Almost Live!; he attempted to correct the show host’s pronunciation of “gigawatt” as “jigowatt.” The host responded, “Who do you think you are—Bill Nye the Science Guy?” and thus his on screen persona was born.

Soon after, Nye hosted an educational television program, Bill Nye the Science Guy, from 1993 to 1998. Each of the 100 episodes aimed to teach a specific topic in science to a preteen audience, yet it garnered a wide adult audience as well.  With it’s comedic overtones, the show became very popular as a teaching aid in schools.  Nye continues to educate children and adult audiences today.

Thanks Bill!  You are one of the greats!

Yearbooks Tutorial: Candid Images

Posted by: admin In: Tutorials 29 Nov 2012 Comments: 0

Here’s an excerpt from our tutorial on the Yearbooks Support site, titled “Tips for creating great candids”

Candids refer to any photo that isn’t a head and shoulder portrait image.  Candid photos are one of the most important and diverse parts of your book, so it’s important to make sure they’re no less than ‘great’.  It’s important to remember that images don’t always appear the same printed as they do on the screen…

Check out the rest of the candids tutorial on Yearbooks Support…

Want more? No problem. Check out our video tutorial, which explains the process of adding candid images to your yearbook pages.

International Men’s Day

Posted by: admin In: Uncategorized 19 Nov 2012 Comments: 0

Objectives of International Men’s Day include a focus on men’s and boy’s health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and highlighting positive male role models. It is an occasion for men to celebrate their achievements and contributions, in particular their contributions to community, family, marriage, and child care while highlighting the discrimination against them.

The November IMD is a significant date as it interfaces the popular ‘Movember‘ charity event and also with Universal Children’s Day on Nov 20 with which IMD forms a 48 hour celebration of men and children respectively, and of the special relationships they share.

imd-web-poster-wrestle-v2bThe ability to sacrifice your needs on behalf of others is fundamental to manhood, as is honour. Manhood rites of passage the world over recognise the importance of sacrifice in the development of Manhood.

Men make sacrifices everyday in their place of work, in their role as husbands and fathers, for their families, for their friends, for their communities and for their nation. International Men’s Day is an opportunity for people everywhere of goodwill to appreciate and celebrate the men in their lives and the contribution they make to society for the greater good of all.

Methods of commemorating International Men’s Day have included public seminars, conferences, festivals and fundraisers, classroom activities at schools, radio and television programs, Church observances, and peaceful displays and marches. The manner of observing this annual day is optional; any organizations are welcome to host their own events and any appropriate forums can be used.  This year the theme is Positive Male Role Models. Should you want to choose another theme for your particular celebration you are quite at liberty to do so.

International Men’s Day is celebrated in over 60 countries of the world. Too many to list. Join us on November 19 in celebrating the contribution men and boys make to those around them, to their family and friends, their work place and the community, the nations and the world.

John Wayne’s Senior Year High School Yearbook Was Bought For A Dollar On ‘Pawn Stars’

Posted by: admin In: Press Release 14 Nov 2012 Comments: 0 Tags: candids, john, john wayne, pawn, pawn stars, photography, stars, wayne, year book, yearbook

Following our recent trend of reporting on celebrity yearbook photos, we came across a story about a man who made a real find at an estate sale.

Man Bought John Wayne’s Senior Year High School Yearbook For One Dollar

A lucky man who picked up John Wayne’s high school yearbook for only a dollar brought it into the “Pawn Stars” to see what they thought of the rare item.

Wayne’s name was Marion Morrison back then, and the guys at the shop quickly discovered that he was all over that yearbook. The yearbook was from Morrison’s senior year, and he played football, was class president and was very active in the arts. And each photo of him throughout the yearbook made it a better and better find.

The shop was thrilled with the yearbook and made a deal with the customer to buy it for $800. Considering he’d spent $1, that turned out to be a great purchase for him. And he got to see a fun piece of a movie legend’s history.
